Bound volume of notes taken by Ernst von Leutsch at Georg Ludolf Dissen's lectures entitled Philologische Encyclopädie (Philological encyclopedia) in the summer semester 1828, at the University of Göttingen. The lectures appear to constitute an introduction to the study of classical philology, beginning with general remarks on scholarly study; on writing and the alphabet (p. 15), with a chart of the Phoenician, Hebrew, and Greek alphabets (p. 15-16); and on the history of libraries (p. 20). Included are brief overviews of the history of Greek literature (p. 31-77; outline, p. 31); and of Roman literature (p. 77-103). Further major sections (Abschnitte) are numbered as follows: 2. meter (p. 103); 3. rhetoric (p. 147); 4. scholarly reading/criticism (p. 260); 5. hermeneutics (p. 297); 6. chronology (calendar/time) of the Greeks (p. 327) and the Romans (p. 398); 7. antiquities (p. 424); 8. mythology (p. 426); 9. art history (p. 427); 10. grammar (p. 429). The last portion (zweiter Hauptabschnitt) concerns concepts of education (Bildung; p. 449-588).

Leutsch was born in Frankfurt am Main; as a result of his father's having various government posts, his family moved several times during his childhood and youth, and he attended Gymnasium in Dresden, Leipzig, and Celle.
